PRESS RELEASE from Jerome Jenner gallery at SMASH

PRESS RELEASE from Jerome Jenner gallery at SMASH.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 16, 2008

As part of the 2008 Contact Festival The Jerome Jenner gallery at SMASH announces the opening of its first show of photography, "Tattooed Pin-Up."

3pm on May 3, 2008 at 2880 Dundas West. (West of Keele)

"Tattooed Pin-Up" will mark the grand opening of Jerome Jenner in its new home in Toronto's Junction area. Somewhere between gallery and art factory, with full silk screening facilities on site, Jerome Jenner will be a unique art production and retail space.

Inspired by the legendary punk rock, pin-up cultural phenomenon known as "Suicide Girls", the show will feature the work of three of North America’s finest photographers, Steve Carty, Kareem Ajani and Caitlin Free. Through their careful documentation of women's tattooed bodies, the artists draw the viewers attention to tensions between high art and craft exploring the body as a site for personal, political and sexual expression. Issues about the decoration and memory of the body raised by the subject matter of the show resonate with this year's Contact theme, "Between Memory and History".

The opening will include a live photo shoot and new products from eLLIPTIC Clothing Company.

Jerome Jenner will market a wide range of original paintings, fine art and pop surrealism prints, clothing, found art and antiques. Jerome Jenner has found its first home within the vast space that will open under the name SMASH later in the month. While focusing on architectural antiques, architectural furniture and found art imported from around the world, SMASH will work with Jerome Jenner's artists to function as a rich resource for consumers and designers looking for unique objects and original art works.

Contributors to the Jerome Jenner Gallery/Smash include Dustin Jenner, director of Jerome Jenner, artist Jon Todd, clothing designer Kestin Cornwall of eLLIPTIC Clothing, architectural antique expert Paul Mercer (formerly of Post and Beam Architectural Reclamation), real estate agent Jose Nieves and creative director of Lula Lounge, Jose Ortega.
